Interstate
77: I-77 slices a sliver off of extreme southwestern West Virginia.
It comes up from its southern beginnings in Columbia, South Carolina at
an intersection with Interstate 26, to its northern termination in
Cleveland, Ohio at an intersection with Interstate 90. It largely
replaces the old U.S. Highway 21 between Cleveland and Columbia as one
of the best north-south corridors through the middle Appalachians.
I-77 is synonymous with The West Virginia Turnpike along the southern
most 88-mile section, between Charleston and Princeton West Virginia. It
is also along this section that it becomes a toll road. Much of this
roadway, especially between South Charleston and Beckley, has a signed
speed limit of 60 MPH due to the many sharp turns, steep mountainous
climbs, and heavy truck use in this area. A few of the old bridges from
the Turnpike's original 1954 alignment of two lanes are still in use
today, although most were rebuilt in the 1980's when the road was
widened to 4 lanes. |

I-77 through Charleston was built in the late
80s and has a very modern look to it. You get a great view of the city as the
road is built on the side of a hill, east of the city. In contrast, I-77 north
to Parkersburg is an older road (1960’s) and while not as aesthetically
pleasing, it is a quality un-congested roadway.
The entire 187-mile I-77 roadway through West Virginia crosses the states major
cities of Parkersburg, Charleston, Beckley, Princeton and Bluefield. I-77 meets
up with I-79 and I-64 just to the east of the state capitol city of Charleston.
